Description
The biography, The Life and Death of Martin Luther King and this booklet, The Life and Death of Martin Luther King Study Guides are for students of history and busy teachers, to help them meet the demands of the National Curriculum. Students are advised to read the relevant chapters of the biography before attempting the exercises in the Study Guides.
The Study Guides provides the basis for stimulating ways of encouraging reading for history. The contents envelop the principles of enquiry as required by the National Curriculum Programme of Study. The contents are targeted at Key stage 3 students. However, its use is not confined to these students alone. Furthermore, the biography also meets the National Curriculum requirements of study of a major personality of the time and thus can be used to assist coursework and may also be read independently of the Study Guides.
The contents herein are based upon the recommendations of the Qualifications Curriculum Authority’s Guidelines and Exemplar Material for years 7-9, written in anticipation of Government guidelines for reading initiatives in schools.
It focuses on prior knowledge assessment mechanisms like brainstorming; grids are used to organises the facts of what has been read, while ’scaffolded’ tasks are incorporated to bring out the potential of the student. Assignments and comprehension questions are also included to encourage the style of writing required for later stages of learning. Student self-evaluations are effectively carried out through out through the progression of tasks in the Study Guides.
